Sutlers

Sutlers and other civilian merchants and couriers were important to the soldiers in making their circumstances a little more comfortable and keeping them connected to home. Peter discussed them by name in some instances, and apparently Clarinda knew them. He commented on how reliable they were (or were not), and whether their rates were reasonable. In one case, he was upset by one who went back and forth to Utica but had described the condition of the 146th as dirty and demoralized. He stopped associating with that person.
